Camarasaurus, a genus of sauropod dinosaur, lived during the Late Jurassic period, approximately 155 to 145 million years ago. It was one of the most common large herbivores of its time, especially in North America, and is well-represented in the fossil-rich Morrison Formation. Camarasaurus, whose name means "chambered lizard," is so named because of the hollow, chambered vertebrae in its spine, which helped reduce weight without sacrificing strength—a common adaptation in large sauropods.
